Invitation: 11th International Human Rights Conference – The Human Face of Climate Change

Dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 11th International Human Rights Conference entitled
“The Human Face of Climate Change: Rights, Risks and Resilience,”
which will be held on 12 June 2026 in Valencia, Spain.

Climate change has a direct and increasingly visible impact on the realization of fundamental human rights, in particular the rights to life, health, security, and protection against discrimination. Extreme weather events — heatwaves, droughts, floods, and violent storms — disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, including older persons, persons with disabilities, children, and individuals with low socio-economic status.

The conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary scientific forum addressing key and timely questions, including:

  • To what extent does climate change restrict the effective enjoyment of human rights?
  • Can environmental protection measures lead to disproportionate limitations of individual rights?
  • How can environmental protection be reconciled with technological and economic development?
  • Does the climate policy of the European Union adequately reflect global inequalities in emissions and responsibility?

The primary objective of the conference is to move beyond debating the existence of climate change — recognized as a scientific fact — and instead focus on an in-depth analysis of its social, legal, political, and ethical consequences.

The event is addressed to scholars representing the social sciences, particularly legal scholars, human rights researchers, environmental law specialists, political scientists, philosophers, and ethicists. The conference is open and interdisciplinary in character, welcoming also contributions from economics, sociology, public health, and technical sciences.

The conference will serve as a forum for presenting research findings, exchanging experiences, and formulating public policy recommendations aimed at reconciling environmental protection with the respect for human rights and social security, with particular attention to the challenges observed in Spain and the Mediterranean region.

We would be honored by your participation in this important academic discussion.
